Practice music

Use slower songs at first. Listen for the structure, clap the pulse, then add your basic step. Everything below lives right here on Flowaka — no leaving the page.

Basic salsa musicality and timing

Four listening drills that take you from hearing noise to hearing the count.

01

Count the 8-beat phrase

Salsa is counted in two bars of four: 1-2-3, 5-6-7. The 4 and 8 are pauses. Clap on every count first, then only on 1 and 5 to feel where each phrase starts.

02

Find the conga slap

The conga 'slap' lands on 2 and 6. If you can hear that open tone, you have found the heartbeat of the song — your basic step can hang on it.

03

Follow the cowbell

In the montuno section the cowbell plays on 1, 3, 5 and 7. It is the loudest, most stable layer — perfect for checking you are still on time.

04

Mark before you move

Listen to a full song without dancing. Tap the pulse with your foot, then mark your basic in place. Only travel with the step once the timing feels automatic.
